Project Description
By Chris Fulton (CTLE)
After hastily transitioning to an online teaching environment, we find ourselves now preparing for what might be our first online exams. Here are excellent tips and insights from colleagues who joined online meet-ups in March, April and May.
Poll from meet-up: What do you think is the biggest challenge in teaching or assessing online?
Challenge #1: Engagement
1. Keeping students engaged in online learning environments is more complicated than in traditional classrooms, but one way to engage students is through online chat activities. Zoom, UMMoodle and WeChat offer chat tools that students seem more comfortable using to communicate and express themselves.
2. Another tip on how to engage students involves asking students, in advance of a class, to prepare to present or respond to guided questions during an online class. Colleagues participating in these online meet-ups found that guided questions provided in advance were an effective way to encourage participation.
Challenge #2: Academic Honesty
3. One excellent point was that to raise students’ awareness of the importance of academic integrity requires continually reminding students about it. Having students submit a declaration that they understand the university’s rules on academic honesty before and during an exam can help. Also, CTLE has prepared an online quiz on academic honesty, which aims to raise awareness of the rules at UM. That quiz can be taken by all UM students or instructors.

4. It is essential to use the tools in UMMoodle to reduce opportunities for cheating. Veriguide or Turnitin should be used for written online exams. These two tools will save you time and automatically check students’ written work against sources from the Internet and other students’ texts. Online quizzes can also be set up to shuffle questions and answers and reduce opportunities for students to collude.
Challenge #3: Setting up UMMoodle for Exams
5. Using a quiz or assignment for an online exam requires changing a few settings. At the recent online events, quick start guides and tips were shared, and hopefully, these guides will save instructors time.
6. Conduct mock or trial exams so that students are more prepared for the actual ones. Students will need a chance to learn about how to complete online quizzes and assignments, and the settings for your exams may be different from those of your colleagues.
A special thanks to all the colleagues who took the time to join our recent six online events, particularly, Prof. Garry Wong, Prof. Katrine Wong, Dr. Alice Lee, Ms. Miranda Ma, Mr. Miguel Costa and Mr. Fernando Wong, who presented at these events.
