On September 16th, CTLE held a multifaceted online professional development workshop which brought together two distinguished guest speakers and over 60 colleagues from the University of Macau. In addition, the event comprised of two panels in which experts provided pedagogical strategies and gave participants an opportunity to interact in an open discussion.

Opening Remarks
Prof. Michael King-Man Hui, VRAA

Prof. Hui raised three questions to arouse participants’ interest in the themes and topics of the faculty development workshop.

  1. Given the fact that 70% of our undergraduate students live on campus, and we have a gorgeous campus and excellent teaching support and facilities, why do we still want to promote blended teaching and learning? Why do we still want our students to watch videos online when both the instructor and the students are on campus?
  2. Do you think our students are self-motivated enough to make hybrid teaching and learning a success? And, how about our teachers? Both teachers and students will have to make extra effort for hybrid teaching and learning.
  3. What should we do in order to enhance students’ motivation and their readiness to participate in blended teaching and learning activities?

Blended Learning Development and Trends
Prof. Irwin King, CUHK

Blended learning is a pedagogy that combines traditional classroom learning with online education resources and technology. In his presentation, Prof. King shared recent developments and promising trends in blended learning, and illustrated how blended learning would not only support changes to teaching and learning needs by reducing physical attendance, but also strengthen the interactions and efficiencies between teachers and students through technology in times of crisis.

Blended Learning ABC: Approach, Benefits, Credibility
Dr. Julia Chen, HKPolyU

Blended learning has become an umbrella term with multiple definitions that encompass pedagogic approaches, technology-enhanced active learning, diverse instructional methods, and convergence across the curriculum. With teaching and research examples from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, this keynote discussed the purposes of blended learning for the student, the teacher and the institution; some of the conceptualizations and designs of onsite-online mix to achieve desirable blends; and methods to evaluate blended learning and its impact on the learner.

Panel Conversation: Facilitating Student Learning In-class and Online: UM Evidence and Tips
Prof. Katrine Wong, DCTLE/FAH
Prof. Alexandr Svetlicinii, FLL
Prof. Ruiyu Xie, FHS
Prof. Roberval Teixeira E SILVA, FAH

[Watch Video]

In this panel conversation, colleagues who have experience with blended learning approaches shared a few tips. The talking points included: differences between online and in-class in a blended-learning mode and useful learning activities for blended-learning pedagogies.

Open Forum: Connecting Learners On and Off Campus
Prof. Katrine Wong, DCTLE/FAH
Prof. Rico Lam, Registrar
Mr. Antony Si Tou, ICTO
Mr. Ho Yiu Pong , FMM
Mr. Vincent Sou, FMM

This forum provided colleagues with an interactive platform to share observations and explore pedagogical designs feasible for this semester’s teaching and learning arrangement.

If you have any further questions for our keynote speakers, please feel free to contact Prof. Katrine K. Wong (kwong@um.edu.mo) who will relay your messages.

  • 你認為我們的學生能足夠主動自己學習以令混合教學取得成功嗎?老師方面又做得怎樣呢?澳大師生都必須為混合式教與學付出更多的努力;
