On 17 September 2025, CTLE hosted a faculty forum exploring innovative assessment design across social sciences and STEM disciplines. Moderated by Dr. Chris Fulton (CTLE), the session provided colleagues with opportunities to share and discuss strategies for redesigning assessments that prioritize authentic learning, student engagement, and process-oriented assessment.
The forum featured three faculty members exploring innovative assessment strategies across their disciplines. Prof. Michiel Spape (ICI) presented a revised statistics course where students use videos and portfolios to present personally relevant research findings. The course assessments also included low-stakes oral assessments. Prof. Elizabeth Tien Ping Hsiang (FED) shared her process-oriented approach emphasizing student growth through learning portfolios, self-assessment activities, and practical demonstrations, with grading criteria provided early and revision opportunities encouraged. Prof. Francisco Leandro (FSS) introduced innovative tasks to engage learners: including in-class review activities using AI tools, crossword puzzles for collaborative recall, and poster presentations replacing term papers.

Participants explored aspects of assessment further in small group discussions on managing student expectations, AI integration in student work, and classroom communication. Those discussions revealed shared challenges and solutions for maintaining academic integrity while embracing innovation. The forum highlighted key principles: authenticity over artificiality, process over product, and multiple modes of expression that recognize different student strengths.
