On 20 August, CTLE held New Faculty Training. This training, providing new faculty members with a general introduction to teaching and learning in the UM context, aims to equip colleagues with skills that can be used to facilitate more effective teaching and learning at UM. Over 60 UM new faculty members joined this interactive professional development event.
Prof. Katrine Wong, Director of CTLE, gave a warm welcome to new colleagues and wished them a successful academic journey at UM. She began by outlining UM’s vision to be an internationally recognized university through quality education, impactful research and community service. Key components include leveraging UMMoodle for announcements, assignments and online discussions, and promoting teaching excellence via faculty development events, Teaching Portfolio Faculty Learning Community, as well as University Teaching Excellence Awards.
Prof. Wong also emphasized aligning Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) with assessments to ensure measurable student achievements, incorporating active and collaborative learning strategies. She introduced UM’s guidelines on generative AI and Academic Honesty Quiz. Faculty are encouraged to use different resources in the community. The session also highlighted the importance of addressing diverse learner needs and integrating AI ethically to complement human interaction in education. Slides and video of Prof. Wong’s presentation are available on our website.
Essential E-Learning Tools at UM
The second part of the training, led by Dr. Chris Fulton and Mr. Miguel Costa, introduced participants to UM’s core e-learning systems. The most widely used system is UMMoodle, our platform for managing courses and enhancing communication with students through tools like discussion forums. Faculty can access UMMoodle via the MyUM portal (myum.um.edu.mo), which also provides links to other essential services, including the Student Information System (SI Web), UM’s secure generative AI tools, and more. The session also highlighted additional resources to support teaching, such as Turnitin for academic integrity and resources and services available through the Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement (CTLE). Presentation slides and video are available on our website.
