On Oct 30, CTLE hosted a professional development seminar with a focus on the challenges and opportunities within General Education (GE). About 70 UM academic staff attended the event, which featured one external speaker and one UM speaker.
Prof. Thomas Lee, the Director of the Office of University General Education at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), delivered a seminar on fostering critical thinking in GE amongst the challenges posed by generative AI (GenAI). He emphasized that nurturing critical thinking is essential to GE and highlighted the significance of reading and writing in this context. Prof. Lee explored the complex processes involved in effective reading and writing. Urging educators to stay alert to the implications of GenAI on students’ learning experiences in GE, He cautioned that students who rely on GenAI to replace any key component of these skills risk missing out on mastering the complex operations necessary for proficient reading and writing. During his seminar, Prof. Lee also introduced to the audience the design of the foundational courses in CUHK’s GE curriculum.

Following this, Prof. Garry Wong, the Head of General Education Programme at UM, presented an overview of the GE courses offered at the University. He shared information about course offerings, sections and enrollments. Prof. Wong highlighted some of the popular GE courses from different disciplines such as performing arts, humanities, business and sciences. Additionally, he outlined the process for developing new GE courses at UM and engaged in discussions with colleagues about the future direction of GE offerings at UM.

10 月 30 日,教與學優化中心舉辦專業發展研討會,重點關注通識教育面臨的挑戰和機遇,活動邀請兩位校內外的通識教育講者,約 70 名澳大教職員參加。
來自香港中文大學的大學通識教育部主任李行德教授,以探討〝在生成式人工智能 (GenAI) 帶來的挑戰中,培養通識教育的批判性思維〞作主題演講;他表示培養批判性思維對通識教育至關重要,並強調了閱讀和寫作在當中的重要性。
李教授探討有效讀寫所涉及的過程,並敦促同事們對 GenAI 對學生在通識學習體驗的影響保持警惕,他也提醒學生們若依賴 GenAI 來替換讀寫技能的任何重要部分,可能會減低他們的讀寫能力及批判性思維,繼而降低教學質量;他還向同事們介紹了中大通識課程基礎課程的設計。

澳大通識教育課程主任黃值富教授介紹了本校的通識教育課程;他除了分享了有關課程設置、部分和註冊的資訊外,還介紹來自不同學科的受歡迎的通識課程,如表演藝術、人文、商業和科學。此外他還概述了校內發展新的通識課程的流程,並與同事討論澳大通識課程的未來方向。
