On 8 Mar, CTLE held a professional development seminar on promoting active learning and student engagement in learning-centered teaching. About 30 UM academic staff joined the event.
The seminar was delivered by Professor Cecilia Chun, Director of Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She emphasized the importance of active learning in classroom. She highlighted the importance of enhancing students’ ownership of their own learning and increasing their readiness for active learning. She suggested that teachers could help students achieve these goals by providing them with opportunities to reflect on their learning progress, set learning objectives, and engage in self- and peer-assessment activities. Professor Chun also mentioned the need for a supportive learning environment where students would feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. Scaffolding activities, collaborative learning opportunities and a focus on student-centered teaching can all help to create such an environment.
In addition, Professor Chun encouraged teachers to stay updated on the latest developments in their fields, teaching methods and technology. Technology is changing rapidly, and educators need to be aware of the latest developments to provide the best learning experience possible for their students.
