Faculty Professional Development Workshops:Raising Awareness of OERs

Description
In this awareness session on open educational resources (OERs), speakers will explain the creative commons licenses and how they define the uses of OERs. The focus will be on OER textbooks specifically. They will discuss the barriers to OER for academic staff and what librarians can do to minimise those barriers. They will also cover the elements of “digital rights management free” and “inclusive access” options from publishers and identify OER platforms and search engines as a beginning to discovery.

Speakers’ Bio
Mr. Frank Ponte – Manager Library Services (Teaching), RMIT University, Australia
Frank works within the Teaching and Research unit of the Library and manages the associated activities relating to Teaching support. This includes driving the uptake of open educational resources, the curation of online resources to support teaching, the development and delivery of microcredentials, and the introduction of reading lists software within Canvas course shells.

Ms. Rebecca Rata – Senior coordinator, Copyright, RMIT University, Australia
Rebecca works within the Teaching and Research unit of the Library and manages Copyright Services including eReserve and permissions. She work closely with the team to ensure copyright compliance in the use of library and third party resources used in course platforms, as well as taking an educative approach to help the RMIT community understand their rights and responsibilities with copyright.
