Abstract 

This seminar explores the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, emphasizing flexible teaching and course design to remove learning barriers. Suitable for both seasoned and new instructors, the speakers will showcase inclusive strategies and their benefits. Beginning with tracing UDL’s evolution from its roots in architecture to its application in education, and then how to use the framework to design or refresh a course. What is preventing some students from excelling? Are they unmotivated? Do they have access barriers? The seminar will delve into strategies for identifying these barriers, and how to go about finding more flexible teaching strategies.

Bios

Dr. Carolyn Aslan is the senior associate director at Cornell University’s Center for Teaching Innovation. She works with the Active Learning Initiative, which helps faculty incorporate active learning methods into their classes to increase student learning and engagement. She also enjoys supporting new faculty in developing their teaching practices and designing their courses. Her interest in teaching developed as a faculty member in archaeology at Koç University in Istanbul where she taught courses in Anatolian archaeology, ancient mythology, and history. She received her Ph.D. in archaeology from Bryn Mawr College.

Julie Rummings has been an Instructional Designer in Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation since 2018. She supports instructors of all modalities with finding solutions to instructional problems, managing innovative teaching projects, and creating more inclusive and accessible learning experiences. She has a strong expertise in creating barrier-free learning environments. Prior to joining Cornell, she worked as an Instructional Designer for online courses with a focus on non-traditional learners. Julie received a Master of Science degree in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation from Syracuse University.
