DESCRIPTION:Lecture for Students: Strategic Learning – A Holistic Approach To Studying \nEvent RecapThis talk will cover: \n\nHow the brain tricks you from having good study habits\nHow eating\, sleeping\, and wasting time can help your learning\nHow the science of learning can improve your grades and make you a better life-long learner\n\nParticipants will be able to: \n\nIdentify examples of the counterintuitive nature of how people best learn and why we often employ the wrong strategies to learn optimally.\nIllustrate the many influences on learning and understand why a holistic approach to learning is needed.\nApply some strategic learning principles to your learning.\n\nBio of speaker: \n \nRobert K. Kamei\, MD\, is a Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS)\, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine\, and Duke-NUS Medical School. He also holds a tenured faculty position at Duke University\, USA. He has devoted his career to helping all students (not just medical students) learn optimally. A pediatrician by training\, he has first-hand knowledge that students must be healthy to learn at their best. \nIn 2006\, he moved from the United States to Singapore to help start Duke-NUS Medical School\, a collaboration between Duke University and NUS. In 2014\, he received the Outstanding Educator in Residence Award from the Singapore Ministry of Education. He served as Associate Provost and founding Director of the Institute for Application of Learning Science and Educational Technology (ALSET) at NUS from July 2016 to 2019. ALSET focuses on the rigorous study of educational best practices in the classroom. \nHis course on the science and practice of learning has been one of NUS’s most popular general undergraduate electives. He wrote his book Strategic Learning: A Holistic Approach to Studying to give more students a chance to learn how to optimize their learning. \nProfessor Kamei has an Instagram (@robertkkamei) that provides learners with additional tips on learning and achieving greater success in life. \nHe holds an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a medical degree from the University of California\, San Francisco. First\, Chris Fulton will introduce teaching techniques that can help focus learners at the start of a class. Next\, three tools that help instructors create engaging\, focused experiences will be introduced: Yuja’s in-video quizzes\, Yuja’s in-video comments/social annotations\, and Copilot – for designing more relevant active learning activities.  \n\nAbout Keynote speaker: \n \nDr. Julia Chen (PhD\, FTCL\, PFHEA) is Director of the Educational Development Centre and courtesy Associate Professor of the Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  Her research interests include leveraging technology for education\, learning analytics for quality enhancement\, and English Across the Curriculum.  She (co-)leads large-scale multi-university projects on GenAI in education.  Dr. Chen has won numerous awards\, including recently the Outstanding Educator Award from EDUtech Asia\, the QS Reimagine Education Awards Breakthrough Technology Innovation in Education Silver Prize\, the Hong Kong UGC Teaching Award\, and twice her university’s President Award for Excellent Performance in teaching and service respectively.  Dr. Chen has been invited to give keynotes and talks in over ten countries and regions.  She is Chair of the Hong Kong Teaching Excellence Alliance initiated by the HK University Grants Committee\, a Principal Fellow of Advance HE\, and was awarded the lifetime designation of Distinguished Fellow by the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum. \n
