SUMMARY:CTLE Professional Development Seminar: Removing Barriers to Learning with Universal Design Principles
DESCRIPTION:Event Recap\nLight lunch will be provided after the seminar.\nParticipant will get 1 PD hour for attending the seminar.\n\nAbstract  \nThis seminar explores the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework\, emphasizing flexible teaching and course design to remove learning barriers. Suitable for both seasoned and new instructors\, the speakers will showcase inclusive strategies and their benefits. Beginning with tracing UDL’s evolution from its roots in architecture to its application in education\, and then how to use the framework to design or refresh a course. What is preventing some students from excelling? Are they unmotivated? Do they have access barriers? The seminar will delve into strategies for identifying these barriers\, and how to go about finding more flexible teaching strategies. \nBios \n \nDr. Carolyn Aslan is the senior associate director at Cornell University’s Center for Teaching Innovation. She works with the Active Learning Initiative\, which helps faculty incorporate active learning methods into their classes to increase student learning and engagement. She also enjoys supporting new faculty in developing their teaching practices and designing their courses. Her interest in teaching developed as a faculty member in archaeology at Koç University in Istanbul where she taught courses in Anatolian archaeology\, ancient mythology\, and history. She received her Ph.D. in archaeology from Bryn Mawr College. \n \nJulie Rummings has been an Instructional Designer in Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation since 2018. She supports instructors of all modalities with finding solutions to instructional problems\, managing innovative teaching projects\, and creating more inclusive and accessible learning experiences. She has a strong expertise in creating barrier-free learning environments. Prior to joining Cornell\, she worked as an Instructional Designer for online courses with a focus on non-traditional learners. Julie received a Master of Science degree in Instructional Design\, Development\, and Evaluation from Syracuse University.

SUMMARY:CTLE Professional Development Seminar Reimagining GE: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Event RecapNurturing critical thinking in general education: the challenges of generative artificial intelligence (90mins) \nSpeaker: Prof. Thomas Hun Tak Lee (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) \nIn this talk\, speaker will show that the development of critical thinking crucially involves the complex processes of reading for in-depth understanding and articulating complex ideas with words\, sentences\, and connected discourse. These psycholinguistic processes\, which are being increasingly challenged by the advent of generative AI\, will need to be preserved and enhanced as an integral part of humanities education\, in order for critical thinking to continue to be nurtured. \nImagine\, Create\, and Teach a GE course at UM (30mins) \nDiscussion led by Prof. Garry Wong (FHS) \nBio of Speaker: \n \nProf. Thomas Lee received his BA in English Literature from Swarthmore College\, and his Ph.D. in Linguistics from UCLA. His research interests lie in language and cognition\, with particular reference to language learnability and first language acquisition of Cantonese and Mandarin. He is currently director of Office of University General Education\, Chinese University of Hong Kong\, having formerly served in various roles at the university\, as Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Arts\, Chairperson ofthe Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages\, and Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Language Enhancement. Professor Lee is on the editorial boards of a number of journals\, including Language Acquisition (Taylor and Francis) andContemporary Linguistics (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences).
