DESCRIPTION:CTLE Half-day Professional Development Event: \nPromoting and Assessing Class Participation \nEvent RecapJoin us for a dynamic half-day seminar to gain insights and learn practical techniques on assessing class participation for effective and inclusive learning through expert sharing\, mock class activities\, and quick demonstrations.  \n9:30 – 9:35 Opening remarks by Prof. Michael Hui (Vice Rector for Academic Affairs)  \n9:35 – 11:05 Keynote presentation by Prof. Jennie Mills (University of Warwick)  \n11:05 – 11:10 Break  \n11:10 – 11:55 Practical session facilitated by Prof. Katrine Wong and Prof. Jennie Mills  \n11:55 – 12:25 Technology session by Dr. Christopher Fulton   \n*Lunch refreshments will be provided to registered participants. \nKeynote Presentation: Assessing class participation for effective and inclusive learning  \nThis interactive workshop will explore how to assess class participation authentically\, effectively\, and fairly to promote active and engaged student learning. Participants will consider the benefits\, opportunities\, challenges\, and constraints afforded by their own context when assessing class participation to identify policies\, tools\, and practices able to leverage positive outcomes – for students and for teachers. We will critically evaluate existing marking rubrics designed to assess class participation holistically before working collaboratively to create rubrics which are well-aligned with our teaching goals and aspirations for equitable and high-quality student learning within our diverse learning communities.  \nBio of speaker \n \nDr. Jennie Mills is acting Head of the Academic Development Centre at the University of Warwick\, providing leadership across a range of professional development and institutional enhancement programmes and initiatives. Prior to joining Warwick\, she was a Consultant in Academic Practice at Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy)\, working closely with colleagues across the UK sector to develop innovative and excellent teaching. Her research explores the arts-based and post-qualitative pedagogies and practices within academic development and higher education research. Her areas of expertise include curriculum development\, digital education\, and assessment. \nPractical Session: Trying out different strategies of assessing class participation  \nIn this hands-on session\, participants will be divided into groups and assigned to different rooms. They will have the opportunity to experiment with various strategies for documenting and assessing class participation through mock class activities. Afterward\, participants will reconvene for a follow-up Q&A session to share their experiences and insights.  \n   \nTechnology Session: Promoting class participation with UMMoodle and Forms in PowerPoint \nDiscover how UMMoodle can enhance class participation. We will look at Moodle’s features and Forms in PowerPoint to explore ways to actively engage students and facilitate effective communication and collaboration.
